Prepara and D2L Brightspace

Prepara is a courseware platform: interactive course books students read at app.preparacourse.com, with lessons, checkpoint questions, and an AI tutor. D2L Brightspace is the course website system your school uses. Connecting the two puts a Prepara link inside your D2L Brightspace course: students press it and their book opens, already signed in, and the grades they earn in Prepara flow into the D2L Brightspace gradebook on their own. Students never see any setup.

For instructors: start without IT

You can teach with Prepara today, with no D2L Brightspace connection and no IT request.

  1. Create an instructor account at app.preparacourse.com, or email admin@preparacourse.com and we set it up for you.
  2. Create your class in the app and it gives you a join code, a short code that identifies your class.
  3. Put the join code in your syllabus; students register, enter it, and appear in your class list.

Everything then runs on Prepara itself: reading, lessons, checkpoint questions, and a gradebook you can download as a spreadsheet. More detail for instructors is on the instructors page.

Put Prepara inside D2L Brightspace

If you want Prepara inside Brightspace with automatic grade sync, your Brightspace administrator registers it once and creates one deployment. You do not need to know anything technical: copy the email below and send it to your IT department. It carries every value the forms ask for.

Subject: LTI 1.3 registration request: Prepara courseware

Dear IT,

My course uses Prepara (app.preparacourse.com), a courseware platform, and I would like to request its registration in Brightspace as an LTI 1.3 tool so students can open it from their course and grades can sync to the gradebook.

In Admin Tools (the gear), open Manage Extensibility, the LTI Advantage tab, press Register Tool, choose Standard, and enter:

Name: Prepara Courseware
Domain: https://preparacourse.com
Redirect URLs: https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/launch
OpenID Connect Login URL: https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/login
Target Link URI: https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/launch
Keyset URL: https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/jwks
Extensions: Assignment and Grade Services, Names and Role Provisioning Services

After registering, create a deployment (View Deployments, New Deployment) with the same extensions, tick User Information in the security settings so the launch carries names and emails, and add the org units that should have Prepara.

Requested services and why: Assignment and Grade Services (the tool creates its own gradebook columns and posts scores back, which is how students' work in the courseware reaches the gradebook) and Names and Role Provisioning Services (roster read, names and roles only, used to match enrolled students to their section). The tool needs the launch to carry the student's name and email for that matching. Student records are handled under a standard FERPA school-official posture (https://preparacourse.com/privacy).

Once it is set up, could you send me the Registration Details Brightspace shows for the tool (Client Id, Issuer, Brightspace Keyset URL, OAuth2 Access Token URL, OpenID Connect Authentication Endpoint) together with the Deployment ID, so the link can be completed on the Prepara side?

Thank you!

When IT finishes, they send back the Registration Details Brightspace shows (Client Id, Issuer, Keyset URL, OAuth2 Access Token URL, OpenID Connect Authentication Endpoint) plus the Deployment ID. Email those to admin@preparacourse.com if IT has not already; we complete the registration on our side and confirm. After that, open Prepara from your D2L Brightspace course once and pick your class in the chooser that opens. The roster and the gradebook columns follow on their own.

For D2L Brightspace administrators: the install

Prepara connects to Brightspace through LTI Advantage, Brightspace's name for the LTI 1.3 standard that connects teaching tools. The install is two short forms: a registration (you enter the tool's addresses and Brightspace generates the identifiers) and a deployment (you choose which org units, meaning which departments or the whole organization, can use the tool). There is no one-URL configuration for Brightspace; the forms take the values directly.

  1. Sign in as an administrator, press the gear (Admin Tools), and open Manage Extensibility.
  2. Open the LTI Advantage tab, press Register Tool, and choose Standard.
  3. Enter the tool's values: Name Prepara Courseware; Domain https://preparacourse.com; Redirect URLs https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/launch; OpenID Connect Login URL https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/login; Target Link URI https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/launch; Keyset URL https://preparacourse.com/api/lti/jwks; under Extensions tick Assignment and Grade Services and Names and Role Provisioning Services.
  4. Press Register; Brightspace shows the Registration Details (Client Id, Issuer, Brightspace Keyset URL, OAuth2 Access Token URL, OpenID Connect Authentication Endpoint). Keep them; they go back to Prepara at the end.
  5. Press View Deployments, then New Deployment; pick the Prepara registration in the Tool menu, tick the same extensions, and under Security Settings tick Org Unit Information, User Information (so the launch carries names and emails, which Prepara needs to match students to their class), and Link Information.
  6. Press Add Org Units and add the departments (or the whole organization) that should have Prepara, including descendants.
  7. Press Create Deployment and copy the Deployment ID.
  8. Send the Registration Details from the register step plus the Deployment ID to admin@preparacourse.com.

That is the whole install. Once we confirm the registration on our side, instructors add Prepara to a course from the deployment's links (View Links, then New Link with the launch URL) or from the course's Existing Activities menu, and grades flow to the Brightspace gradebook on their own.

What the connection reads and writes

Paid access is separate: each student's own Prepara account governs what they can read, and connecting D2L Brightspace never changes who has paid access. Student records are handled under a FERPA school-official posture; the details are in the privacy policy. Questions from IT or from instructors both reach a person at admin@preparacourse.com.

Setup values

These are the values the Brightspace registration form asks for, the same ones the email above carries. There is no one-URL configuration for Brightspace; the forms take them directly.
